The only thing that really matters

Life is an uncertain business at any age, but perhaps especially as we age. Who knows what is going to happen next? For example, a couple of weeks or so ago I set out for a walk, one of my most favorite activities. It was a beautiful fall morning, the Colorado sun was beaming down, then suddenly my left foot began to hurt.

It hurt quite a bit. What's this all about, I thought, as I hobbled home and sank thankfully into the comfort of my arm-chair. Tendonitis, perhaps? Arthritis?

You have a stress fracture, the podiatrist says, as she examines my foot.  Goodness, I had never heard of such a thing.  If I follow instructions, it should heal in 2 to 4 weeks, the doctor says as her nurse comes in with a huge black walking boot that weighs at least 50 pounds. That's a joke by the way, but not a very good joke, I must admit.

I know quite a bit about stress fractures now, of course, just as I know quite a bit about various other challenges, physical and otherwise, that like to come knocking on our door, at any age, but especially perhaps as we age.

Yes, we live in uncertain times. But if we turn in love to the truth at the core of our being we will discover the only thing that really matters: the courage, wisdom and compassion of our true nature.

I send blessings and love to you. If you have any thoughts on the above, please do write.
